International Education Week has brought so many benefits for me. It is an annual event from the U.S. Department of State for foreign students that study in the U.S. This event is usually held in the middle of November before Thanksgiving. International Education Week’s (IEW) purpose is to create a better understanding between the U.S. and other countries, by sharing their culture and give presentations about the foreign student’s home country.
Celebrating International Education Week is mandatory for my exchange program. We must give at least one presentation to our community. It was awesome! I had many concerns the day before. I was most concerned that my presentation might be boring for them. I was afraid the audience would be not interested, and I thought it would be super awkward during the presentation, but I was totally wrong! I am so happy and thankful for this International Education Week which gave me the opportunity to share and present everything about my country. People were really interested and they looked very excited about knowing something new and different.
My advice for the new exchange students next year is that this is a really good opportunity for you to build a new and better understanding, along with a good perception about your home country. It will be really easy to attract attention if you make your presentation as creative as you can. You can bring something from your country to give to them, make a quiz and give them food to eat. You could show your country’s money or coins, give them bookmarks from your country, or share dishes from your country with them. These are only some of the ideas that you can do to attract your audiences’ attention!
